Step 1: Get Off the Road as Far as Possible

The moment you sense something is wrong — strange noise, loss of power, a warning light, flat tyre — start moving toward the edge of the road immediately. Don't wait until the car fully stops. Every metre you gain off the travel lane reduces your risk.
